A homeowner in Notting Hill who had a large sliding glass door that became increasingly difficult to move, decided to contact London Window & Door Repairs. What was once a very smooth and convenient feature of the house had now become a heavy, stubborn door that was only opened by applying a lot of force.
Considering that the door was essentially a large glazed panel, the customer was quite naturally worried about the safety aspect. To try and find the cause and decide on the safest way to get the door working again, an inspection was scheduled without delay. Besides the Christmas party being a major factor in the timing here as well.
After our engineer was welcomed in at the property, the first thing he realised was that this was far from a regular patio door. The glazed panel was very large and heavy, and the fact that the door was so difficult to open showed that something had gone wrong in the running system. The customer told the story of the door becoming harder and harder to slide until it very nearly stopped moving altogether. What should have been a simple move, was now just like having to lift a dead weight.
During the survey we found that:
- The rollers/wheels were broken because of the weight of the door
- The track had been worn and slightly damaged
- The size of the glazed panel meant it had to be removed and replaced very carefully
- Only specialist replacement parts would work
The risk factor in handling such a large glass door meant that the job was very carefully thought out with a six person team to ensure safe lifting, stability and accurate realignment after the fitting of the new components.
As soon as the specialist track and roller parts were delivered, our team went back to the site to fix the problem five days later.
Unfolding the repair in a controlled manner, the engineers:
- Removed the large sliding glass door safely
- Took out the worn trackSet up a new track system
- Changed the broken wheels/rollers
- Put the glazed panel back very carefully
- Aligned and adjusted the door
- Did the full movement testing
Safe lifting was the theme throughout the whole operation to protect not only the glass but also the neighbouring structure.
