Overview

London Window & Door Repairs had a window and door repair call, out at Index Tower in Stratford (E15) where we were asked to fix a problem with a sliding patio door which would not lock properly. The apartment was situated on the 19th floor and consisted of a modern glazing system with a glass balustrade being installed right outside the sliding door.

Since the balustrade limited direct access to the door mechanism, a lot of preparation was required before our repair team could actually start the work. After taking down the glass balustrade in a safe manner, our team accessed the sliding door system and performed the required repairs to restore the locking feature.

The Call Out

The customer advised that over time their sliding patio door had become harder to lock. Although the door was still sliding, the lock mechanism was not engaging properly which lead to concerns about the security and safety of their apartment.

Considering the height of the property and the presence of the glass balustrade, this was a job that necessitated a very cautious and controlled method.

What We Found

Upon our arrival and inspection of the unit, we verified that:

  1. The sliding door lock mechanism had gone out of alignment
  2. The external glass balustrade limited access to the door system
  3. To restore lock engagement the door had to be adjusted
  4. The balustrade had to be removed in a safe way to be able to access the sliding door mechanism

Our engineers determined repair procedure that will ensure both the safety of the operation and the integrity of the glass unit.

The Repair Story

As a first step, the glass balustrade panels had to be removed carefully to allow for the sliding door hardware to be reached. After the glazing was taken off with care, our engineers could get to the door mechanism and carry out the repair.

The repair work entailed:

  1. Safely removing the glass balustrade to get to the door system
  2. Checking the locking mechanism of the sliding door
  3. Tweaking and repairing the lock parts
  4. Aligning the sliding door
  5. Testing the door for correct locking and smooth operation
  6. Securely reinstalling the glass balustrade

Each piece was put back and tested to be sure that both the glazing system and the door were fully safe and secure.

Time Taken

1. Inspection and access planning on, site

2.Removal of the glass balustrade safely

3.Repairing and adjusting the sliding door lock

4.Refitting and testing the system during the same visit

The Result

The patio sliding door is now fully functional and locking securely again. The door moves effortlessly along the track, and the locking mechanism engages correctly, thus security and ease of use are restored.

The client was happy with the quick response and the careful handling of the glazing system, as the installation on the 19th floor was a very complex one.
